UK to Implement New E-Visa System Starting January 2025
UK to Implement New E-Visa System: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has announced a significant shift in the UK’s visa policy, set to affect travelers aiming to stay in the United Kingdom for extended periods.
From January 1, 2025, the UK will transition to an entirely electronic visa (E-Visa) system, replacing all physical visa documents, including Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) and Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs).
E-Visa System to Enhance Efficiency and Security
According to the British High Commission, the E-Visa system is expected to streamline the visa process and improve security measures for travelers. As part of this transition, physical visa documents will no longer be valid past December 31, 2024.
UK to Implement New E-Visa System: Key Aspects of the Transition
- E-Visa Requirement for Long-Term Stays: From January 2025, travelers planning to stay in the UK for more than six months must apply for an E-Visa, which will serve as the only valid documentation for extended stays.
- Expiration of BRP Cards: Holders of Biometric Residence Permits with permission to live, work, or study in the UK must switch to E-Visas, as all BRP cards will expire at the end of this year, regardless of their original expiry dates.
- Travel Advisory for Current Visa Holders: The Ministry advises individuals planning international travel over the holidays to secure their E-Visas before December 31, 2024, to prevent issues when re-entering the UK.
UK to Implement New E-Visa System: The Ministry’s advisory, signed by Acting Director for Information and Public Affairs Bureau Victor N. A. Adamah, encourages affected individuals to start preparations for the E-Visa transition. For additional information, travelers are advised to consult the British High Commission’s website or reach out to UK immigration authorities for guidance.
