TechGirls Summer Exchange Program 2025: The U.S. Department of State is excited to announce the 2025 TechGirls Summer Exchange Program, an exceptional, fully-funded initiative designed to empower and equip the next generation of young women with the skills and opportunities to excel in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.
The program provides a transformative experience through a dynamic three-week summer exchange in the United States, supplemented by a seven-month mentoring program.
This unique opportunity brings together young women, aged 15-17, from various parts of the world, allowing them to gain hands-on STEM training, foster leadership skills, and participate in cultural exchange activities. With a focus on practical skill-building and community engagement, the program aims to inspire participants to pursue higher education and careers in STEM, especially in technology.
Program Highlights and Key Activities
- Dates: The 2025 program runs from July 12, 2025, to August 2, 2025. In addition to the in-person exchange, participants will engage in a mentoring program that begins before the exchange and continues after their return home.
- Participants: The program will host 111 young women from 37 eligible countries and territories across different regions, alongside 13 peers from the United States, creating a multicultural environment for learning and collaboration.
- Hands-on STEM Training: Participants will receive intensive training in various STEM disciplines, including workshops, lab sessions, coding exercises, and other technology-focused projects.

- Accommodation and Meals: Participants will stay in double occupancy dormitory accommodations at Virginia Tech and hotels in Washington, D.C. All meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, will be provided throughout the program.
- Travel and Health Coverage: The program covers roundtrip international airfare, domestic travel within the U.S., visa fees for international participants, and emergency health insurance for the duration of the exchange.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the TechGirls Summer Exchange Program 2025, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Age Requirement: Applicants must be between 15 and 17 years old at the start of the program (born between July 13, 2007, and July 12, 2010).
- Nationality and Residency: Eligible candidates must be citizens of one of the 37 participating countries or territories and reside in that country at the time of application. The list of regions and countries includes:
- Sub-Saharan Africa (AF): Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zambia.
- East Asia and Pacific (EAP): Cambodia, Fiji, Indonesia, Mongolia, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
- Europe and Eurasia (EUR): Albania, Cyprus, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, and Türkiye.
- Middle East and North Africa (NEA): Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian Territories, and Tunisia.
- South and Central Asia (SCA): Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
- Western Hemisphere (WHA): Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and Suriname.
- United States: U.S. citizens are also eligible to participate.
- Academic and STEM Interests: Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in STEM subjects and have advanced skills in at least one STEM field.
- English Language Proficiency: Must possess advanced intermediate English language skills to effectively participate in the program.
- Education Requirements: Applicants must be currently enrolled in secondary school and plan to return for at least one more semester after completing the exchange.
- Commitment to Community Engagement: Participants should show a commitment to using their skills to contribute to their communities and complete a community-based project after the program.
- Ineligibility Conditions: Candidates are ineligible if they are relatives of U.S. Embassy or Consulate staff, U.S. Department of State employees, or Legacy International staff. Additionally, students who have participated in other U.S. Department of State ECA exchange programs within the last three years are not eligible.
