Parliament Adjourned Indefinitely as NPP MPs Fail to Attend Session
Parliament Adjourned Indefinitely: Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin indefinitely adjourned Ghana’s Parliament on Thursday, November 7, following the absence of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs), which hindered proceedings due to a lack of quorum and business on the agenda.
The session was convened as an emergency sitting to address pressing national issues. However, the absence of NPP MPs disrupted the session, leaving the house unable to deliberate or make decisions. Speaker Bagbin expressed disappointment, citing the failure of the NPP MPs to follow through on their request for the recall of Parliament.
“Matters that they wanted us to handle, which I admitted for consideration from the business committee, are not on the Order Paper… In view of the failure of the business committee to sit… we are compelled to once again adjourn the sitting of the house indefinitely,” he stated.
Parliament Adjourned Indefinitely: NDC Caucus Criticism
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus, sharply criticized the NPP MPs for their absence, accusing them of causing financial loss to the state. He highlighted that significant resources were used to reconvene Parliament for the session, only for it to be rendered ineffective.
“This action wasted taxpayer money and deprived citizens of potential legislative progress,” Forson remarked.

He called on the NPP MPs to act responsibly, emphasizing that their absence not only disrupted proceedings but also undermined the credibility of the institution. Forson further urged Parliament to establish measures to ensure such occurrences are avoided in the future.
The incident reflects ongoing tensions and challenges within Ghana’s parliamentary system, where the absence of bipartisan cooperation often impedes legislative progress.
