New Subjects Introduced in 2024 BECE: A Comprehensive Overview
New Subjects Introduced in 2024 BECE: The Ghana Education Service, Ministry of Education, NaCCA, and WAEC have collaborated to implement substantial changes in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Final year Junior High school (JHS) students in Ghana are poised to write three new subjects in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
With these additions, the landscape of examinations has undergone a substantial change that reflects the nation’s changing educational priorities.
The New Subjects
The three new subjects include:
- Career Technology
- Creative Art and Design
- Arabic
Career Technology and Creative Art and Design, which are derived from the old Basic Design and Technology (BDT), would be compulsory for all applicants, according to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). For applicants attending Islamic basic schools, Arabic will be an elective, though.
The previous BECE examination covered a wide range of subjects, including social studies, integrated science, mathematics, and the English language.
But there’s a change from the usual subject schedule with the addition of Arabic, Creative Art and Design, and Career Technology.
Approved Subjects for 2024 BECE
Mandatory subjects like English language, mathematics, general science, social studies, career technology, religious and moral education, and creative art and design are among those that the Ghana Education Service (GES) lists as approved subjects for the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Furthermore, candidates have the option to select elective courses like computing, French, Arabic, and Ghanaian languages.
The subjects that will be covered in the 2024 BECE are included in the official schedule that WAEC provided. Specific subjects are assigned each day in order to provide a well-organized examination process.
- July 8, 2024: English Language and Religious and Moral Education
- July 9, 2024: General Science and Computing
- July 10, 2024: Social Studies and Creative Art and Design
- July 11, 2024: Mathematics and Ghanaian Language
- July 12, 2024: French and Career Technology
- July 15, 2024: Arabic
Each candidate will be required to write eight or nine subjects based on the course offerings at their institution. School discretion may determine whether they include optional subjects like Arabic, French, or computing (ICT).
One of the most important methods of assessment for Ghanaian students finishing their basic education is the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
It is a crucial turning point in students’ academic careers since it influences their placement in senior high schools and other educational courses.
