NDC MPs Occupy Majority Side Amid Parliamentary Standoff

NDC MPs Occupy Majority Side

NDC MPs Occupy Majority Side: Around 40 Members of Parliament (MPs) from Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) have taken seats on the majority side of the House, leaving the minority side empty.

This is the second time in recent weeks that the NDC caucus has adopted this unorthodox seating arrangement, sparking debate over which party currently holds the majority in Parliament.

The dispute began after Speaker Alban Bagbin declared four parliamentary seats vacant on October 17, impacting the balance of power. This included three seats held by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and one by the NDC, reducing the NPP’s seats to 135, while the NDC claimed a slim edge with 136 seats. Following Speaker Bagbin’s declaration, the NDC asserted itself as the new majority.

However, the Supreme Court intervened on October 18, issuing a stay of execution on the Speaker’s decision and allowing the affected MPs to continue representing their constituencies until a final ruling is made. Despite the court’s decision, the NDC caucus has maintained its stance as the majority, further intensifying the standoff with the NPP.

Onlookers are left questioning how Parliament will function amid this ambiguity, especially as NPP MPs have yet to enter the chamber, leaving the NDC caucus in solitary occupancy of the House. The unfolding situation underscores the high stakes in Ghanaian politics, where parliamentary control holds significant implications for both legislative processes and party power dynamics.
