Moving Health Launches Three New Ambulances in Wa West District with KGL Foundation Support
Moving Health Launches Three New Ambulances: Moving Health, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing emergency medical transportation in rural Ghana, has launched three new ambulances in the Wa West District.
The ambulances, now serving the communities of Poyentanga, Bultuo, and Chogsie, were introduced at a launch event on October 10, 2024, held at the District Health Directorate in Wechiau. The event marked a significant milestone in expanding access to emergency medical services in underserved regions.
Expanding Access to Emergency Care
Since 2019, Moving Health has been actively involved in providing customized, three-wheeled ambulances designed specifically for rural communities where conventional emergency vehicles face significant challenges due to rugged terrain and poor road infrastructure. With the addition of these three ambulances, the organization now operates 21 vehicles across the Upper West Region, reaching over 100,000 residents in Sissala East, Wa East, and Wa West Districts.
The new ambulances were made possible through the generous support of the KGL Foundation, which is committed to backing innovative healthcare solutions. KGL Foundation’s support underscores its dedication to reducing maternal mortality and improving healthcare delivery in remote areas.
Design and Functionality Tailored to Rural Needs
The ambulances are designed to meet the unique needs of rural communities. They feature a removable stretcher, seating for family members and healthcare personnel, and basic life-support equipment to ensure safe and accessible medical transportation. Built on a tricycle frame, the ambulances can easily navigate rough roads, making them an ideal solution for emergency situations in rural Ghana.
The ambulances are also proudly built in Ghana, using local fabricators and suppliers, thus supporting local industries and contributing to economic growth. This initiative aligns with Moving Health’s commitment to empowering local communities through sustainable solutions.
Significant Impact and Community Involvement
Moving Health Launches Three New Ambulances: The launch event saw participation from various stakeholders, including representatives from the Regional Health Directorate, District Health Directorate, National Ambulance Service, Ghana Fire Service, healthcare workers, and community leaders. The gathering underscored the importance of collaboration in improving healthcare outcomes in the Wa West District.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Prosper Lana, representing the Regional Health Director of the Upper West Region, expressed gratitude for the ambulances, noting that the previous reliance on motorcycles for emergency transport posed significant risks to patients. With the new ambulances, access to emergency medical care will be significantly enhanced, complementing the efforts of the National Ambulance Service in the region.
Commitment to Sustaining the Initiative
Wa West District Health Director’s representative, Mr. Alidu Shaban, commended Moving Health’s efforts to revolutionize emergency transportation in the region. He emphasized the project’s potential to impact the district’s health sector positively and pledged the District Health Directorate’s commitment to maintaining the ambulances.
The Country Director of Moving Health, Mr. Isaac Amoah Quansah, provided an in-depth overview of the ambulances’ features, including their spacious interiors designed to accommodate up to four passengers, ensuring comfortable and secure transport for patients and accompanying medical personnel. He reiterated Moving Health’s mission to address healthcare disparities in rural communities through innovative and practical solutions.
Collaboration and Future Prospects
Moving Health Launches Three New Ambulances: The success of this initiative has been supported by the guidance and collaboration of Dr. Damien Punguyire, Upper West Regional Director of Health, and his team, whose continued support has been instrumental in advancing Moving Health’s impact. Moving Health extended special thanks to Dr. Punguyire for his ongoing encouragement.
With the new ambulances in operation, Moving Health and its partners look forward to significantly improving emergency medical response in Wa West District and beyond. The organization remains committed to working closely with local stakeholders to ensure the ambulances’ longevity and effectiveness, making quality healthcare accessible to even the most remote communities.
