Ghana Commences Mass Voter Registration Exercise

Electoral Commission of Ghana to Publish

Mass Voter Registration: In anticipation of the December 7 national elections, the Ghanaian Electoral Commission (EC) has launched a limited voter registration initiative to enroll a handful of around 620,000 first-time voters.

Starting Today, May 7, the 21-day exercise is being carried out in all 258 of the Commission’s district offices.

To help those who might have trouble getting to the registration centers, the EC has set up 785 extra centers in addition to the district offices.

To help eligible applicants with the registration procedure, 25 public colleges have been designated as registration centers.

EC Chairperson Jean Mensa emphasized to the Accra media how important it is to assemble a reliable voter list in order to have transparent elections.

She underlined that transparent and acceptable elections cannot be ensured in the absence of accurate voter registration.

Five important districts—Ayawaso West Wougon, Ayawaso Central, Korle Klotey, Ayawaso East, and Ayawaso North—have experienced registration delays despite the registration exercise being implemented countrywide.

According to reports, the issues go beyond these districts and represent a countrywide issue that might potentially cause problems with the registration process.

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Deputy National Communications Director, Godwin Ako Gunn, has asked the EC to be transparent about the difficulties the registration process is encountering.

Gunn called on the EC to concentrate on its primary duty of promoting voter registration and emphasized the significance of swiftly resolving concerns in order to guarantee the success of the approaching elections.

To guarantee that people with disabilities (PWDs) may visit registration centers and get prompt assistance, the EC has put procedures in place.

To secure the registration process, additional excellent security measures have been implemented in cooperation with the National Election Taskforce, which is headed by the Inspector General of Police.
