Highway Collapse in Guangdong Province: A section of the expressway linking Meizhou City and Dapu City collapsed in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, causing a terrible disaster in the Guangdong province of China.
The fall happened about 2:10 a.m., according to sources, trapping eighteen cars under the debris.
When emergency personnel arrived, they saw a scene of devastation and commotion that was captured on camera.
Teams of rescue workers put up endless effort to locate survivors and retrieve bodies from the debris. As of Wednesday morning, 24 people were confirmed dead, with thirty individuals seeking medical attention in hospitals.
Extent of Damage
After dawn, photos showed a depressing scene of cars stacked up at the bottom of a gully. It was claimed that twenty cars had crashed into the section of the road that had collapsed.
It is still unknown how much damage has been done and how many people have been lost, even with continuous rescue operations.
The highway collapse is the latest in a string of recent calamities in Guangdong, many of which have been linked to severe weather.
A tornado that slammed Guangzhou over the weekend claimed the lives of at least five people. Record-level rainfall, powerful storms, and major flooding have also ravaged the region in recent weeks.
