Black Princesses Eliminated from 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup as Argentina Clinches Crucial Win
Ghana’s hopes of advancing in the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup were dashed after Argentina secured a crucial victory on Sunday evening, ending the Black Princesses’ chances of making it past the group stage.
The Black Princesses needed a win against New Zealand in their final group game, along with a favorable result from the Argentina-Costa Rica match, to secure one of the last slots for the four best third-placed teams.
While Ghana awaited Argentina’s result with Costa Rica, the South American side scored in the first half and held on to secure a 1-0 win, bringing their total points to four—equaling the tally of other third-placed teams like Mexico, Canada, and South Korea. This result ultimately blocked Ghana’s path to progression.
Yussif Basigi’s team, having lost their first two matches to Austria and Japan, faced an uphill battle and will now end the tournament with only three points if they win against New Zealand. This marks another disappointment for the Black Princesses, who have yet to advance beyond the group stage in seven attempts since their tournament debut in 2012.
