Asiedu Nketia: Arrest 2020 Election Killers Before I Sign Peace Pact
Asiedu Nketia: The National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana’s main opposition party, is demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible for the violent incidents that occurred during the 2020 general elections as a prerequisite for signing a peace pact with the National Peace Council.
This stance was articulated by the NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, commonly known as General Mosquito, during a campaign tour in the Banda constituency in the Bono Region.
Asiedu Nketiah made these remarks at durbars with chiefs and community members in Bui, Bongase, and Banda Ahenkro, emphasizing that the party would not engage in peace talks until justice is served. The NDC leader criticized the government’s delay in addressing the violence, particularly incidents that led to the death of eight people in Techiman and the killing of a teacher, Silas Wulechemy, during a registration exercise in Banda.
Background on 2020 Election Violence
The 2020 general elections in Ghana were marred by violence in various regions, resulting in loss of life and property damage. The unrest, particularly in the Bono Region, significantly impacted communities and contributed to a climate of fear and mistrust among the populace. Despite repeated calls for justice, there has been little progress in apprehending the individuals behind the violence, which has fueled dissatisfaction with the government and security agencies.
NDC’s Call for Justice
The NDC is calling on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to ensure that those responsible for the election-related violence are arrested and held accountable. The party’s National Chairman condemned the killings, stressing the need for swift and decisive action to restore public confidence in the rule of law. Asiedu Nketiah warned that if the current administration fails to take action, the NDC would pursue justice once it comes into power, vowing that no one would be above the law.
Commitment to Law and Order
Asiedu Nketiah reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to upholding justice, pledging that any individual involved in election violence would face prosecution under an NDC government. This stance reflects the party’s broader strategy to address grievances related to electoral violence and reinforce democratic principles in Ghana.
Call for Responsible Campaigning
The Chief of Bui, Nana Kojo Wuo II, also urged political leaders to prioritize unity and avoid making unrealistic promises during their campaigns. He emphasized the importance of peaceful electioneering, advising politicians to encourage their supporters to refrain from engaging in actions that could lead to violence or disorder.

Asiedu Nketia: The Road Ahead
The NDC’s demand for accountability underscores a significant challenge for Ghana’s political landscape, as unresolved issues surrounding the 2020 election violence continue to stir public discontent. The call for justice not only aims to address past grievances but also serves as a precondition for future peace-building efforts. As the 2024 general elections approach, ensuring a transparent and fair process will be crucial in maintaining stability and public trust in Ghana’s democratic institutions.
